OverviewThe Mirage of Ambition is a personal collection of poems about the rugged and ironic nature of pursuing independence, value, meaning, love, and a fulfilling life when living with severe mental illness in 21st century America. I was diagnosed with schizophrenia over 20 years ago in my teenage years. I was told then that the only way to pay for my medicine was to go onto permanent disability. At that time, my medicine cost me more than a $1,000 a month. When I turned 19 in 2002, I decided to pursue a career and eventually pay for my medicine without needing government assistance of any kind. My entire writing career on top of my medical coding career is a manifestation of how I have become a reluctant outlier in American society. Many of these poems are about the champion mindset in a chaotic and socially duplicitous environment.
