On the contrary, the code made ample pro vision for all these stipulating, however, that such offices must be held as under the Supreme Ruler, and filled by persons obedient to the laws, and ministers of God. As this special feature has been fully treated of by other writers, it need here only be remarked that the Mosaic legislation by no means - as it has been falsely asserted - contemplated a hierarchy. In fact, not only was the tribe of Levi so circumscribed in position that it was utterly impossible for it to arrogate to itself power over the other tribes, but from the time of Moses to that of the Maccabees only one priest, Samuel, is found ruling the Israelites. In conclusion, attention should be directed to a few distino tive features of the Theocracy, and to its special agencies, as illustrated by the history of Israel.
