The term 'eportfolio' means different things to different people. Defining what 'eportfolio' is as an idea, a learning practice, an assessment approach, an approach to advising has proved challenging. Although eportfolio technology is widely used in higher education throughout the world EDUCAUSE surveys usage in 55 countries the technology is used in so many different ways that few higher education faculty or administrators would be able to define it. But, finally, thanks to this book by Bret Eynon and Laura Gambino of CUNY, we now have a core definition: eportfolio is a high impact learning practice. This is a very important classification not only because it is the eleventh high impact practice as defined by George Kuh and publicized by AAC&U, but because this definition is about learning. Eportfolios have many other uses showing how valuable a technology it is but at the core is the important value for improving learning. This book makes the case for this central understanding of the meaning of 'eportfolio' in higher education.The Eynon-Gambino book will become an instant classic, readable, authoritative, reflecting the experience of multiple institutions of various kinds and classifications, and finally settling the question 'what is an eportfolio?' I recommend this book to anyone in higher education. With eportfolios now used on most higher education campuses, the book will help educators understand how best to use the technology for a number of purposes. Gambino is a Professor and the Faculty Scholar for Teaching, Learning, and Assessment at Guttman Community College. George D. Kuh is Chancellor's Professor of Higher Education Emeritus at Indiana University and adjunct research professor of education policy at the University of Illinois.
