Table of ContentsReviewsPart of the Cartoon Nation series, this very entertaining book gives a good overview of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The history begins with the ten agents recruited by Attorney General Charles Bonaparte in 1908. This was in response to President Theodore Roosevelt's concern about criminals who escaped by crossing state lines. The author traces the growth of the bureau through prohibition, a name change, and the administration of J. Edgar Hoover. World War II and the cold war presented special challenges to the bureau, which had a big hand in catching spies. Today, the FBI has eight major divisions and recruits the best people into five areas of expertise. Even their dogs are highly specialized. Each page has several cartoon figures, which reinforce the facts presented. Parents and teachers may not always appreciate the irreverence, but kids will like the humor. The facts are also reinforced by a very good time line. The Fact Hound website maintained by the publisher is very useful, with further links to the FBI's kids' sites. The book also contains a glossary, a bibliography, and an index.-- Children's Literature Comprehensive Database I just got The Explosive World of Volcanoes with Max Axiom. Thank you so much! My students, especially the boys, love your Graphic Library books and will be thrilled with this new Max Axiom title. I was reluctant to buy this style book, just because it doesn't appeal to me personally, but being the mother of two boys, I realized that I should give Graphic Library a try. I'm so glad I did. The Capstone books I purchased last spring have had huge circulation rates and have made readers out of many boys over whom I have often worried. I'm not so worried any more. I really don't think I could buy enough of them, but I certainly will try.
