OverviewSince the collapse of communism and the application of Central and East European states to join the European Union, the problem of relating the enlarging Union with an enigmatic Russia stands exposed in a new light. This comparative study analyzes the relationship from both sides, studying Russian policy towards the EU as well as EU policy towards Russia. Suspended between co-operation and competition for influence, these two powers are set to dominate the European scene for decades to come. Trade, finance, raw materials and security issues dominate the formal agenda, but cultural and historical awareness informs the commenatry of these complementary studies. The book analyzes the principal factors influencing relations between the EU and Russia, to present an analysis in an accessible and informative manner, and to suggest ways in which relations could be developed into a permanent and constructive partnership.
