Author Information

Anne was born in Belfast where she lived through some troubled times. Coming from a big Irish family, she was always surrounded by children and it seemed perfectly natural that this would be her chosen career path. Teaching in both mainstream and special needs schools, twenty years ago Anne started working for a children's charity and continues to educate on disability awareness through local schools. Anne believes wholeheartedly in inclusion and diversity and strives to bring this about through her teachings. She is married to a sculptor/woodcarver and life is never dull. With a large family, her favourite times are when they are all together. As a busy service manager, Anne's thinking time comes from her long cycles in the area. She loves the history of the land and walking and cycling give her the perspective she needs for everyday challenges. 'The Enchanted Bus' was written because Anne wanted to be able to go to a bookshop and see books for ALL children. The story looks at disability from the inside out, and all the action is focused on a group of children with varying special needs, structured in such a way that both mainstream and disabled children are able to identify with the characters, and disability, rather than being an issue, is simply another part of the protagonists' personalities. In this way, 'The Enchanted Bus' ceases to be a book overtly addressing disability and instead becomes simply a magical adventure book about all children. Simon is a freelance artist working in film and animation. His studio in York is full of scribbled drawings, numerous paints, favourite pencils and various bits and pieces that inspire him to be creative. Since being a kid, drawing has been something that Simon has done for his own enjoyment. He instinctively draws loosely with pencil or ink, suggesting shapes and movement, rather than perfect likenesses. Simon's favourite illustrators include Quentin Blake, Helen Oxenbury, Judith Kerr, Eric Carle and E.H. Shepard. As a film maker, Simon enjoys telling other people's stories but, inspired by his own young children, he is starting to write his own stories and illustrate them in his own style. It gives him great pleasure when they enjoy his stories and pictures and he aspire to have them grow up reading and appreciating the picture books he has created for them.
