Overview

For more than 30 years, students and practising electricians have relied on John Whitfield to take them step by step through the complexities of the Wiring Regulations in a clear, logical and helpful manner. His Guide is a recognised 'brand' and regarded over the years as the guide to the Wiring Regulations. Unlike other publications, it does not assume that readers are fully conversant with electrical theory. It assumes just a basic knowledge and introduces technical matter with brief easy-to-understand explanations. This 4th Edition of the Guide is a continuation of the bestselling series. It covers the latest Amendment 3:2015, such as auxiliary circuits, earth fault loop impedances protective devices, surge protection and outdoor lighting. As in earlier editions, all useful relevant details derived from other IET publications such as Guidance Notes, Wiring Matters, which might otherwise be overlooked by electricians, are included. Importantly the Guide also benefits from the most up-to- date, hands-on expertise provided by the co-author, Andrew Hay-Ellis, whose credentials are second-to-none.He is an established author of vocational electrical books and, amongst other functions, is a Chief Examiner at City & Guilds. The authors understand that many readers might be sole traders, and so they try to spell out the financial implications and to suggest money saving action where this is possible. No legal jargon, no unnecessary details, comprehensive - yet practical, helpful and easy to put into practice.

Reviews

The layout is well structured, clear, consistent and unambiguous, making it very easy to find the few bits you are specifically interested in right now without having to wade through all the rest of the book. It has an excellent Contents Table, large Index, useful Cross-reference Index (Regs ref number to guide chapter and section) and an essential Abbreviations Glossary. Best of all, the text and diagrams are easy to follow and cover all the practical and theoretical elements of the 17th Regs without confusing the issues. I first bought a Whitfield for the 15th Regs back in 1989; that was a breath of fresh air compared with the massive tomes in our technical library containing the Regs themselves. That copy, even with its reinforced binding, was slim enough to fit the back pocket of my jeans for me to take on site to be able to discuss the quality of the contractors work with them. This new copy is bigger, and requires a wider anorak pocket, or a briefcase, and the binding might suffer more from the inevitable damp, but those are my only criticisms! For peace of mind, buy this. It is so easy to use, and yet it has all the relevant information required by any member of the building team, be they wireman, foreman, installation design engineer, project manager or architect. If you feel the need to argue cases with a lazy contractor then perhaps you might also need the IET OnSite Guide as well, but most will accept Whitfield's wise words. (R.F.S. (hall of fametop 50 reviewer -June 2012 (3rd edition). Verdict 5/5); Bought this because i was doubtful of an electrician's work and this book gave me a very easy way of confirming my suspicions. The book is clear and concise and goes in sufficient depth without overload. i have since found it useful in planning a number of projects. (ZipDC 8 Jan. 2014 (3rd edition). Verdict 5/); An excellent guide for in the field or for explaining procedures to apprentices of improvers, reminds you of the college work and the practical testing side of things as well as of your obligations to adhere to BS7671 the wiring regulations, but with all the formidable jargon removed. Not quite a bedtime read but very interesting and informative, every apprentice or improver should have a copy and most sparks would benefit from its pages also. (Essex Sparkie (2009)(1st edition). Verdict 5/).
