OverviewThe Eagle and The Raven tells an epic tale of rebellion in 14th Century Bavaria. When Knight Gendal offers to take a message to a remote mountain clan, the act of kindness ignites a revolt. Knight Gendal and Sir Rehlein get drawn into the fight to free Count Bertram and the Children of the Raven from the despotic rule of Nicolaus, Duke of Danuvia. Despite their best efforts, their plans to avoid armed conflict drag them ever faster towards the battle that could cost them all their lives. This action-packed sequel to The Eagle and The Butterfly sees Gendal living out the commission given in that story, to help the poor and fight injustice, in an exciting adventure where mysticism and faith must compete with survival. He is a loyal friend who tends to put the well-being of others above his own. He is just easy to like. I liked the development of Count Bertram's character. I think he makes a wise and compassionate leader. I also enjoyed meeting the Widow Astra. I still have mixed feelings about Cara Rea and Widow Astra. (The author does) a great job of making some characters despicable, like the Condottiero and Nicolaus. Some characters I liked from the start, like Friar Fadrique. The world ...created is believable. I can see how knowledgeable (the writer is) about the time period, the language, the customs. I loved the religious elements a lot as well. ; Roy Butler: The compassion for the poor and underprivileged shines through this book. Though the story is set in the 14th Century, it is a real indictment of our present day government and politics.
