Overview

Now, according to some quantum field theories, space-time on the Planck length and time scales and smaller scales should be a roiling, seething, bubbling froth with arcs, bridges, and other fluctuations occurring all of the time. Should this actually be the case, then perhaps yet an additional consequence is that the number of spatial dimensions, and more generally, space-time dimensions may fluctuate from vanishing small real values less than one but greater than zero to untold vast but finite numbers of dimensions. One consequence of Planck Scale and sub-Planck-scale dimensional fluctuations is perhaps an associated zero point field energy, which if some-how reified, might be used to apply pressure on light-sail surfaces made of exotic materials. Accordingly, the energy gain from Planck scale and sub-Planck scale pockets of space-time having a hugely finite range of numbers of dimensions would in first order scale directly as the product of the number of spatial dimensions of the pockets and the temporal durations of the pockets. This is so because the virtual particles likely span the entire size of the pockets. Thus, a 4 dimensional pocket is a one width unit wide stack of one, 3 dimensional pockets in the fourth dimension. A 5 dimensional pocket is a one width unit wide stack of one, 4 dimensional pockets in the fifth dimension and so-on. Thus, each additional dimension allows room for one additional virtual particle. This is because there is no smaller size to a virtual particle in theory.
