OverviewThe discovery of gold in California created a massive migration of Americans to the West shortly after the end of the Mexican-American War. Despite the guarantees of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, many Mexicans were stripped of their property by the new settlers. Those with the financial resources to challenge such takeovers were ultimately successful in retaining ownership. There were those, however, who chose to challenge such takeovers through efforts well outside the legal arena, but equally, if not more effective. This story is about one such incident where the niece of a deceased Mexican landowner returned to Whiskey River to reclaim the land that was rightfully hers after the mysterious disappearance of her husband.
