Since the inception of Nouthetic Counseling, those associated with the movement have recognized the importance of working together with physicians. In James 5, the elders of the church are directed to call upon God in prayer, to confess sins (when necessary), and to use medicine to heal the sick. Because this has been our firm and continuing position, we have always been concerned not to counsel persons whose problems might possibly stem from organic causes as if they did not. But to distinguish between the two causes is often difficult since, in some cases, similar symptoms may arise from both organic and non-organic sources.
