He enjoyed an interesting and adventurous childhood. At he age of fourteen, he found a 17th century treasure in the house his parents were renovating. He attended the International School Eerde, located in an old castle surrounded by moats and dense woods. He moved to Australia when he was seventeen, where he completed his school exams in the top 2%. After traveling the world, he studied zoology, marine biology, and Pascal (an early computer language), in tropical north Queensland. After his Honours, he conducted microbiological research on the reef. Then he did his PhD studying Koalas. He developed the first Koala underpass and invented the 'floppy-top' fence system, which stops Koalas and other wildlife from wandering on busy highways and guides them to the underpasses. During this period, a filmmaking friend asked him to help make a Koala documentary. This led to a number of Internationally award-winning TV productions. Each film included an informational website and through involvement with these he became interested in education. After getting his Secondary teaching qualifications, he entered the school environment. He quickly realized the enormous disruption new technology was having and felt a strong impulse to do something about it. The Internet was providing incredible new educational opportunities, yet at the same time schools were holding back because of the potential risks the Net imposed. Given his systematic scientific training, storytelling, film making and IT skills in combination with his teaching experiences, he was well placed to develop an unique eLearning program to teach the emerging topic of Digital Citizenship. Rather than just providing information, he designed it using constructivist theory to encourage informed dialogue between students, parents, and teachers via emoderated forums. The communal knowledge creation that occurs in these forums makes the learning about Digital Citizenship both relevant and engaging for each school community. From this work the character-driven edufictional book series of Team Savv-i progressed, which starts with eleven graphic novels for Elementary level, then this book for Middle schoolers and cumulating in specialised learning resources for High schoolers. To extend the value of the book series, a 'learning together from each other' eLearning program supports it for each level. Tab Content 6Author Website:Countries AvailableAll regions |
