Overview

Emotions and their role in human life cannot be bounded. These emotions can sometimes be challenging for any individual to deal with. Sometimes these emotions require (and may require) an external person to guide them through the situation to move on. I want to take one small example of fear as an emotion to narrate my own life experience. It happened in my childhood, and now I can see the same as a mother. A few weeks back, my kid was watching a show, and in that show, a kid was shouting when a spider fell on her, and my kid said: Oh no!! I cannot watch this, as I am afraid of spiders . My experience in my childhood flashed before me in no time. In developed countries, spiders might not be typical. Still, in developing countries like India and possibly many other Asian countries, it is common to spot spiders and spider webs on the walls of every home. In India, when I was six and playing at home with other children, a spider fell on me, and I was frightened and started crying. My grandfather was observing this scene and understood my fear of the spider. He dealt with my emotion of fear simply, possibly, by drawing from his own experience. Assuming he might have seen a similar scenario in his life or the knowledge he has gained from his ancestors, he said that I need not cry as it is good, because when a spider falls on anyone, they get new clothes. But is it the truth? To continue the story, if I got some new clothes in a couple of days, it would prompt me to believe that I would get new clothes whenever a spider fell on me. The reason was never known to me, and neither had I attained the age of reasoning to explore the reason for getting new clothes. Can I relay the same to my child, assuming it is true? Or should I study the reason first before responding to my child now?
