Overview

The ancient art of t'ai chi has long-recognized benefits, which range from improved muscular strength to promoting health and longevity. Respected for centuries in China, it has more recently established itself in the West as a simple and accessible aid to coping with the pressures of modern living. T'ai chi is also about the development of the whole individual, body, mind and spirit. This book covers all aspects of the art, from its beginnings and its philosophical background, right through to its practical uses. T'ai chi evolved over many hundreds of years as a martial art and as a system of self development, and all over China its slow, graceful movements were performed by young and old, men and women, in the public spaces of its cities and villages - a tradition that continues today. During the 20th century, t'ai chi was carried to the West, and slowly its popularity has grown worldwide. There are many different variations of t'ai chi, and this book illustrates the Wu style, giving instructions on how to perform the short form in clear, step-by-step photographs, with easy-to-follow instructions. The book explains the Taoist philosophy behind t?ai chi, and how to use your understanding of energy flow and physical balance to improve your practice. With additional sections on working with a partner, push hands exercises, rooting techniques to improve your balance, and relaxing and releasing exercises to help you get the most from your practice, this book is a comprehensive introduction to the art. It also takes t'ai chi theory into other aspects of your life, with valuable information on Chinese medicine, healthy eating, and meditation, which all extend the benefits you gain from practising the ancient art of t'ai chi.
