Williams has spent a lifetime in aviation. He began flying at the age of 17 and obtained his FAA Certified Flight Instructor certificate at 18. During his career he has been employed in many facets of aviation including Chief Flight Instructor for FAA approved flight schools, airline captain, corporate flight department manager and university faculty. His 34 year career with the FAA includes assignments as an air traffic control specialist, Accident Prevention Specialist in Alaska, Aviation Safety Inspector, Flight Standards District Office Assistant Manager, FAA Academy Instructor and regulations specialist at FAA Headquarters. He has taught safety and management courses at the FAA Academy, the Department of Transportation's Transportation Safety Institute and FAA's Center for Management and Executive Leadership. Additionally, he was endorsed by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to teach its Government Safety Inspector (GSI) courses and has taught these courses worldwide. Upon his retirement from the FAA in 2010 he was appointed a Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE). He is certified as an International Air Transport Association Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) auditor, an International Standard for Business Aircraft Operations (IS-BAO) auditor and an Air Charter Safety Foundation (ACSF) auditor. Since his retirement he has worked as an aviation consultant working with aviation entities, airlines and civil aviation authorities worldwide. He holds an Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) certificate with ratings in airplane single and multiengine land and sea, rotorcraft-helicopter and gyroplane, glider and nine type ratings. He also holds a FAA gold seal flight instructor certificate with airplane single and multiengine, instrument airplane and helicopter, rotorcraft-helicopter and gyroplane and glider ratings. He has a Master's Degree in Aerospace Education (M.Ed.) and a Specialist in Education (Ed.S.) degree from Middle Tennessee State University and has served on the Aerospace faculty at both Auburn University and Middle Tennessee State University.
