A useful guide to the Applied Knowledge Test, and a handy alternative to web-based resources. Succeeding in the nMRCGP AKT - Chirag Mehta, Mark Williams & Milan Mehta There are so many websites, free and otherwise, that I wonder why there is a gap for printed books about the Applied Knowledge Test. This book is written by three GPs who were recently successful in passing the AKT. There is a very brief section on how to prepare for the AKT; it seems a shame that they were not able to use their recent experiences to expand this section. At the time of writing there had been 6 sittings of the AKT (now 8) and there is a very short discussion of the division of marks and candidate weaknesses noted in the most recent sitting. It would probably have been more helpful to have a summary of weaknesses over the sittings as a whole. There are 300 practice questions, divided into sections according to type, ie single best answer, extended matching etc. Detailed answers with references to appropriate information sources follow each section. I think this makes the book very useful early on in the revision process. Dr Mohanna, who is a faculty chair and director of medical education, refers to the book as a 'signpost' and 'jump off' and I think that using this book as a way of identifying gaps and easily moving on to fill them would be the best use of the resource. Each question is labelled with the appropriate curriculum heading and indexed in the matching groups at the back of the book. This is a useful way of checking curriculum coverage and again would be helpful early on in revision. Finally there is a 200 question mock paper, the same length as the real AKT, albeit paper not computer-based. This section is also followed by detailed answers and reference links. If you want a paper-based AKT book, I think this is a useful one to buy. This is a newly published book; as time goes on it will be important to make sure you are buying the most up-to-date edition. Dr Clare Etherington is a GP in Harrow in northwest London. ------------------------------------------------------- I am preparing to sit the AKT soon and I must say that this book is turning out to be indispensable. For a start, it starts with up to date statistics on the recent exams and highlights areas that candidates haven't performed well. It is a perfect size for a book that I want to take with me most of the time and is well laid out with good font size and structure making it easy and attractive to read. The coverage of the RCGP curriculum is excellent and it serves as a good tool to identify one's weaknesses. I particularly like the unique subject index at the back enabling me to easily pick out the questions relating to particular curriculum coverage for more focused revision. The answers are detailed and exhaustive and I do not have to keep going back to huge reference materials like the NICE guidelines each time I tackle a question. My only criticism of the book would be on the images- you can increase clarity by having them in colour. It would also be helpful to have a feedback method for questions we feel may be a bit ambiguous. This book is good value for money and a must have for any trainee preparing for the AKT. By Dr J Gitonga ------------------------------------------------- As a GP trainee (ST2) who is planning to sit the AKT exam later this year, I am always keen to use such a book to help me prepare for the exam allowing self-assessment along the way. There are many similar books on the market, and I already have a few to say the least. I am currently working through the questions found in this book, and on first impression it appears well written with an excellent coverage of the vast RCGP curriculum. The answers given are detailed enough giving the 'nuts and bolts' of what you need to know, either confirming you are correct or highlighting your weaknesses and sign-posting you to further 'relevant' reading to bridge the gaps in your knowledge. My one and only criticism of the book is that some of the images used in questions on fundoscopy, rashes and ENT are in black and white and quite unclear making them difficult to interpret. It may have been useful for the book to have clearer /colour images or a companion webpage where all images used in the book could be seen in colour as a point of reference. Despite this minor issue I would fully recommend this book to others considering purchasing such a book in helping to prepare for the AKT, with 500 questions for under GBP20 this book represents value for money when compared to similar books on the market.
