OverviewAnimal collections have altered dramatically over the centuries and in order to improve conditions in modern day zoos, researchers study animals in their captive environment. Their findings are used to develop appropriate management techniques for the species in captivity in relation to their wild counterparts. An exploratory investigation of Oriental small-clawed otters (Aonyx cinereus) was undertaken to examine whether it would be beneficial to undertake a full behavioural study into feeding management and whether the feeding regime affected the natural behaviour of this species. This report also evaluates the changing roles of animal collections and the techniques used in zoos to manage Oriental small-clawed otters' enrichment, feeding, husbandry, breeding and human/animal interactions.
