Overview

Cyclodextrin are ring-shaped glucose molecule chain that have ability to reversibly enclose other substances making cyclodextrin invaluable in many products such as pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, textiles and food, household and personal-care. Recent studies about cyclodextrin reveal some new perspectives. In the last decade researchers are slowly establishing a connection between extremely rare genetic diseases NPC, HIV and anthrax with cyclodextrin. This monograph, provides an information about a novel cyclodextrin metabolism pathway in Klebsiella oxytoca. Several genes that are responsible for the metabolism of these unique compounds were discovered and characterized. The strategy of Klebsiella in overcoming the problem of the toxicity of intracellular cyclodextrin was also explained. This information will serve as the basis for a general approach for researcher who are initiating study on metabolism of unnatural component in bacteria at molecular level. Since several questions are still open, this monograph could be a starting point for professionals to continue the investigation of the metabolism of cyclodextrin in Klebsiella or other bacteria.
