Overview

Students' Foundation for Success' goal is to equip its reader with the skills he or she would need to meet the demands of his or her academic works. It covers the English Macro skills which comprise listening, reading, speaking and writing, which are foundational to students' academic success in all subjects. I adopted the expository approach and I used the language appropriate to secondary and college education. Where a word/a group of words or a topic proves difficult, the reader is advised to seek clarification from a reference material or consult a teacher or a superior. Since the goal of the book is to equip students with the skills to meet the demands of their academic works, I only selected the aspects of the Macro skills which I consider most vital. It however contains exceptionally taught topics in grammar, which belong in the Micro skills. This is necessary for the understanding of what is intended. It is divided into four chapters and the order is deliberate. The first chapter is reading skills, with particular focus on reading comprehension. It covers topics such as reading and reading purpose, techniques for more effective reading, note-taking, methods of asking and answering comprehension and summary passages questions among others. The second chapter deals with listening skills. Topics covered include listening principles, listening modes, class participation and methods of building and improving listening skills. The third chapter covers speaking as a productive language skill, with emphasis on speaking as a means to an end. Topics include use and choice of words, content and functional words, speaking as occasion demands, greeting types, speech writing and presentation, etc, with a number of class works on intonation that students can exercise themselves with on their own or under the supervision of a teacher. The final chapter; chapter four, is devoted to writing as the second productive language skill along with speaking. As it has consistently been the most problematic area for many students, it is focused on helping them to avoid writing ungrammatical, monotonous and awkward sentences, by dealing with the problems of punctuation, agreement, parallelism, wordiness, ambiguity, fragmentation, among others. Various forms of writings, especially creative writings are clinically treated with several examples presented. Exercises are provided at the end of each chapter and the reader is encouraged to attempt answering them. It is of course not a complete work on English language. It is a supplement: a vital supplement for practical needs. As I take it to press, I have not altogether overcome my misgivings: whether every i has been dotted and every t crossed. However, it has been put together in the hope that its readers are able to gain the expected insight that is necessary to enhancing the ability to learn and to improving on the level of performance.
