Overview

Marian, a doctor's widow, has moved to a cottage in a small Pembrokeshire town. Her neighbour in the Big House, Gerald, an expert on the standing stones of the Preseli mountains, believes their power continues today. Marian is sceptical but her visitor, the once-beautiful Sally, is revitalised by some power which seems on that weekend of the storm to touch everyone's life. Their reunion triggers unforseeable events in London and Wales as past deeds are revealed and present certainties shattered. After the storm comes new calm and order, but also a final confrontation between Marian and Sally in this gripping portrayal of the nature of love, lust, friendship and treachery. Twice-winner of the Yorkshire Post Prize, Sian James is the author of nine novels, including Storm at Arberth and A Small Country. She was born near Llandysul, Cardiganshire and educated at Aberystwyth.

Reviews

An initially involving but eventually turgid short novel by an award-winning Welsh writer. Protagonist Marian is a widow who runs a small shop in a rural village and is variously influenced and transformed by her relationships with a manless woman friend, a borderline-fey neighbor who believes in some sort of Earth Magic, and with an imperfectly matched gay couple. An all-too-symbolic approaching storm overhangs an otherwise crisply told story that unwisely ends in a virtual orgy of renunciation and compassionate understanding, placing this curious fiction somewhere between Iris Murdoch and Search for Tomorrow.
