Overview

Steel-Concrete-Steel Sandwich Composite Walls covers key aspects of steel-concrete-steel sandwich composite walls, including: an analysis and design and their loading carrying capacities when subjected to different loading scenarios, e.g., bending, shear, punching, compression, in-plane and out-of-plane shear, etc.; analyzes the basic resistance of the steel-concrete-steel walls; and covers the use of such structures under particular seismic conditions. Such structures combine the advantages of steel and reinforced concrete structures with wide advantages, e.g., it permits prefabrication, increases the construction efficiency, shortens construction period, saves formwork and manpower, and provides high resistance to blast and impact loads. Steel-concrete-steel sandwich composite walls, as a representative structural element of steel-concrete-steel sandwich structures, have been used as the nuclear shielding walls in the new generation nuclear power plant, shield tunnels in Japan, immersed tunnels, ice-resisting walls for Arctic offshore platforms, shear walls in high-rise buildings.

Author Information

Jia-Bao Yan, Ph. D, Professor at Department of Civil Engineering, Tianjin University, P.R. China. Prof. Jia-Bao Yan received his Doctoral Degree from National University of Singapore in 2012, and is currently the Deputy Head of the Department of Civil Engineering at Tianjin University, China. His research covers a wide spectrum of interests including steel-concrete composite structure, cold-region infrastructures, Arctic offshore structures, large span structures, lightweight and high strength materials, seismic and blast design, and marine and offshore installations. Prof. Yan has published more than 130 SCI indexed papers (first/corresponding authored papers more than 120), four books (In Chinese), and involving in drafting three Chinese codes (one is for steel-concrete-steel sandwich structures). He received several research awards, including the Best Paper Award from International Journal of Steel Structures and Korea Society of Steel Institute Tao Wang, Ph.D, Professor at Institute of Engineering Mechanics, China. Professor Tao Wang graduated from Tsinghua University, China and Kyoto university, Japan for his bachelor’s degree and PhD degree. Prof. Wang’s research commits to solve key scientific problems in reproduction of engineering failure mechanism and resilient earthquake engineering. His research findings have facilitated seismic resilience improvement of several important engineering projects. He has established extensive relations of cooperation with many experts from different countries to jointly promote the seismic resilience evaluation and promotion work. He has organized an international special issue on seismic resilience and established Huixian International Forum on Earthquake Engineering for Young Researchers, which attracted more than 600 Young scholars from 30 countries to join. He has won the Second Prize of China National Science and Technology Progress award and many other important awards. He is a leading talent in science and technology of China Earthquake Administration (CEA) and recently won the Outstanding Youth Fund of National Natural Science Foundation of China.
