After her PGCE she taught French and German in English comprehensive schools and then moved into teacher training. In search of a pedagogy for reading in a foreign language she carried out a DPhil research project with Year 7 learners and it was from them that she discovered their struggles with decoding the foreign language and how important that was for their learning. This underlying lack of basic literacy skills leads to demotivation and disengagement from language learning. Lynn has written and lectured on these and related topics and has devised classroom and professional development materials, many of them included in this book. Julie Prince has taught languages in several countries from Australia to Tunisia and from nursery to adult. She has also worked with dyslexic children and bilingual learners. She began as a languages teacher in secondary schools before moving into the primary sector. She has been involved in primary languages for the past 10 years, firstly as a primary languages coordinator and outreach teacher for a language college then as Primary Language Consultant and County Adviser for Languages in Hampshire. Her first experience of phonics teaching was in English when teaching literacy to Foundation and KS1 and she has drawn heavily upon this when creating activities and teaching phonics in other languages. She has spoken widely at support groups around the country and at the Primary Languages Show about phonics and other related topics; she also wrote the Phonic Focus in the QCA schemes of work.
