OverviewRunes are a sample of a remote past that still lives with us in our real and virtual worlds. They are the legacy of the Germans in general. And by Germans we mean the ancient tribes that populated old Europe in remote and not so distant times, whose common origin could be labeled in a more or less similar set: Alamans, Goths, Suebi, Vikings, Teutons, etc., although also with a certain component of Celtic origin. These are times in which reality and legend merged, where the gods walked together with men in a land plagued by conflicts and wars. Later, with the consolidation of the different Nordic and continental nations, the runes were used by societies in Germany, Norway, Sweden, Great Britain, Netherlands, Denmark and Iceland, the latter country of which the largest number of historical records are preserved. In mythical terms, the runes were of divine origin, since it was Odin, supreme Norse and Germanic god, who obtained them by performing a sacrifice by hanging for nine days and nine nights from the branches of the Yggdrasil, the Ash of the Universe.
