He is board-certified by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization in both Criminal Law and Criminal Appellate Law. He is listed Best Lawyers in America, and in Texas Monthly's Super Lawyers and has twice won Lawyer of the Year by his peers with the highest rating for skill and ethics by colleagues and judges. He has prevail in the Supreme Court of the United States, has won exonerations for eight innocent people incarcerated in the Texas prison system, and is the only lawyer in Texas to have twice won a death-to-life commutation from a Texas Governor. Once in 2018, he persuaded Texas Governor Greg Abbott to commute a death sentence to life, and again in 2007 he persuaded Governor Rick Perry to spare another client.
