In February of 1986, the body of the 29-year-old woman was discovered in the Van Nuys, California, apartment she shared with her husband, John Ruetten. She'd been beaten, according to the medical examiner, and shot three times in what appeared to have been some kind of struggle. Initially, the Los Angeles Police Department determined that the killing was simply the result of a burglary gone wrong - whoever had killed Sherri Rasmussen likely hadn't intended to do so. And with that, the crime went unsolved as two decades passed.
