OverviewCovers the truth behind Shell's underdevelopment of the Niger delta. It is widely understood that the activities of Shell are degrading the environment of its host communities: less well-known are the reasons behind its underdevelopment of the Delta. An alternative critical framework for analysing, in a holistic manner, the underdevelopment of the environment and economy of Nigerian oil-producing areas, with particular emphasis on those areas in which Shell operates, this book incorporates a critical analysis of how the environment and economies of oil producing communities are systematically damaged by Shell and the state in comparison with the activities of other oil producing companies like Mobil and Chevron. Omoweh looks into the patterns of protest the inhabitants of oil producing regions have taken to resist their underdevelopment, noting the persons and institutions involved, the interests they represent, their problems and prospects and the responses from both Shell and the state. He argues that the root cause of the environmental degradation of the oil producing areas in the Niger Delta is the mode of state-transnational capitalism in Nigeria's oil industry. The state has taken advantage of its ownership of the land to turn the inhabitants of the oil producing areas into squatters - a practice taken advantage of by Shell. The result is a state-corporate dominance operating with reckless abandon in a country once full of ancestral homes and pristine environments.
