Reviews

It is difficult to find much positive to say about these two little volumes other than that they might help to while away a few minutes while you are standing at the bus stop. Both consist of a collection of more or less one-line quotations from Shakespeare's plays and sonnets interspersed with the odd anecdote about the Bard's life and output (for example that he left his wife his second-best bed, or that 11 of his plays are set in Italy). Each collection is preceded by an introduction containing trite and superficial observations about the treatment of these themes in the works. That on love and sex arrogantly claims to present 'all that Shakespeare has to say about the sexual and spiritual sphere of love' whilst in fact singularly failing to do justice to perhaps the greatest exponent of the subject in the English language. That on foreigners is characterized by sweeping generalisations on the nature of 'Englishness' and predictably stereotypical thoughts on 'Johnny Foreigner'. Written with tongue firmly in cheek, these 'miniature titles', which accompany similar volumes on food and drink and doctors and lawyers, are meant to be just a bit of fun, but with a little more informed comment, they could have been so much more rewarding to read.
