Author Information

The author was an English Language professor in Korea for 14 years; his last position was with the English Linguistics Department of Hankuk University of Foreign Studies. He noticed that Korean students knew a healthy range of English vocabulary but lacked the skills in developing comprehensive sentences. The simple explanations given to ESL learners regarding noun-verb-object structure and the general classifications of sentences as declarative, interrogator, etc. did not help. The learners were given exercise after exercise on writing sentence but had little real understanding on why so many of their attempts were not effective in eliciting information or responding adequately in natural conversation. Learners need examples of patterns they can follow rather than simple corrections without adequate explanation. To this end the author developed this book supplying an array of pattern examples needed to develop the appropriate structure for both the question and answer.
