Those which appeared in the Observer, a quarter of a century ago, will be new to a partially new generation. The critical reader will be at no loss to distinguish which poems have had the advantage of the Author's own corrections at the time of their being published, and which of them must be taken as the unamended work of a student satisfied to confine his verses to the private circulation of the family album. If to this be added that the major part of the original poems and several of the translations are the productions of the Author's younger days, any want of elaboration will be sufficiently accounted for. The editor believes he is right in thinking that no memorial of the late Judge would have been complete without including in it these poems, which breathe the true spirit of the man.
