OverviewThis volume brings together a series of studies which explore the relationship between language learning and the study abroad experience. The 12 individual papers in this collection complement each other in that each focuses on a different aspect of second language acquisition in a study abroad context. Utilizing different research methodologies (quantitative, qualitative, descriptive), they address various aspects of second language learning, including the acquisition of fluency, the use of communicative strategies and the development of oral and written skills. The studies are cross-linguistic and deal with student populations at the secondary and college levels who spent between three months and one year in study abroad or exchange programmes in Japan, Russia, Spain, Mexico, France or Canada. While each of the papers deals with a different but interrelated aspect of language learning in this setting, several common themes appear which unite these studies. As a group they provide an emerging description of the specific language abilities of students who have been abroad as distinguished from those who have not. Full Product DetailsAuthor: Barbara F.
