Overview

Scruffy, the True Tale of An Orphan Doggie is a gripping and heartwarming story narrated by a courageous little dog. Her family in rural Colombia is displaced by war and forced to flee from the homestead where they have lived for generations. As they slowly make their way to the city in search of sustenance the family suffers further downturns and are forced to sell their remaining possessions, including Jacobo the burro, Scruffy's dear friend. When her last protector, little Marta, takes ill and is rushed to a poor people's hospital, Scruffy is lost in the big city! In search of things gone, Scruffy endures adversity on the street until she is almost ready to give up. But in this depth of despair she finds hope, help, and love, and she learns that her sad past actually has built the road to a redemptive future.

Author Information

Over the last three decades Susan Corning has worked in rural development across three continents: Latin America, Sub-Saharan Africa, and Asia. Her MSc from the College of Agriculture, University of Maryland, College Park gave her entree into jobs that took her to faraway locales. These jobs, in turn, gave her unique immersion in multi-cultural environments where she worked alongside socio-economically marginalized people. Places she has lived and worked include Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Kenya, Uganda, Botswana, and South Africa. Her favorite animals include horses, dogs, elephants, cheetahs, giraffes, rock hyrax, and Ankole cattle. Susan's hobbies include equestrian pursuits, raising hens, and gardening. Currently Susan lives on a farm in Bend, Oregon along with her husband Roger, three dogs, two cats, six horses, and 19 chickens. She still owns a horse in Ecuador, as well as one in Kenya. Artist and illustrator Christine Eyer loves living in beautiful Bishop, California, where she enjoys painting, tending her creekside garden, and doting on her four rescue dogs.
