Overview

The conflict in eastern Ukraine - which broke out in 2014 following Ukraine's pro-Europe Maidan revolution and Russia's annexation of Crimea - has seen repeated flare-ups since a ceasefire was brokered in 2015, but the warnings and statements coming from Moscow, Kiev and Washington are the most serious and strongly worded. Moscow and Kiev have been at odds since 2014, when Russia invaded Crimea and Russian-backed rebels in Ukraine's Donbass sparked a brutal civil war. declaring independence for the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, More than 13,000 people have died as a result of the fighting, the majority of them perished in the initial few months of the conflict when Moscow-backed rebels and Ukrainian forces fought for territory. Despite the Minsk Protocol, an EU-brokered ceasefire that went into effect in 2015, there have been periodic periods of warfare since then, as the two sides square off over a 500-kilometer border separating the disputed region between Ukrainian forces and Russia-backed separatists. For years, peace discussions have been essentially deadlocked. The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), which monitors conflicts, reports dozens, if not hundreds, of ceasefire violations. What sparked this Conflict in the first place? Is There a Potential War on the Horizon? This book will tell you all about it and more.
