INTRODUCTION AND RESEARCH REVIEW Background of the study A society constitutes a large group of individuals with diversities who live together and are involved in continuous social interactions. The social interaction of people leads to the formation of different social groups within a society. Thus, society is a network or web of complex mutual interaction and inter-relations that exist between and among the members of the groups. People living in society have similarities and differences in terms of their values, beliefs, languages, rituals, behaviour, race, religion and many other factors. The diversity of people within society gives birth to different social constructs and people are classified based on the similarity of these social constructs. The human being is biologically and psychologically driven to live in association with other fellow beings and cannot live in isolation. An individual is dependent on the society for his/her existence and survival and thereby, determines one's personality. The process of socialization helps an individual to discover and identify his/her sense of self and personality while interacting with other individuals. Thus, society influences an individual's physical and mental development. It shapes one's attitudes, beliefs and morals. The concept of social categorization is also an important aspect of society that leads to the notion of in-group and out-group (Turner, 2010). In-group is a group with which individuals identify themselves based on similar behaviours, attitudes and beliefs, and out-group is a group with which individuals fail to identify themselves.
