High school can be tough on any kid, but it's worse for a loner. Roland West, Loner is a contemporary Christian story about a fourteen-year-old boy who finds himself friendless at a new school and the subject of cruel rumors. Roland lives with his father and older twin brothers in a secluded house that resembles a castle--complete with battlements, turrets, and a secret passageway. Finding it hard to make friends at school, Roland is excited to learn about his father's upcoming trip to Italy. He hopes to go, but one of his brothers stands in his way and will stop at nothing to get what he wants. When Roland ends up locked in the cellar, a neighboring kid and his autistic brother stumble upon the secret passageway and rescue him. Theresa Linden's superb writing will draw you in and her real-to-life characters will keep you reading to discover what Roland's friend Peter has inherited, who's after it, and whom Roland can trust. With mystery, suspense, a hint of budding romance and an encounter with the Divine, Roland's story has something for everyone. Carolyn Astfalk, author of Stay With Me Roland West, Loner, is one of those books I couldn't put down. Linden tells a delightful tale, weaving the supernatural with the ordinary in a way that left me breathless. You'll never doubt the Communion of Saints after reading this wonderful novel. Roland West, Loner is a great novel for pre-teen and teen boys and girls because it demonstrates the power of prayer and of forgiveness to heal rifts in families and between friends. I learned right along with the story's characters about a particular Catholic saint, Conrad of Parzham, but I won't disclose how he figures into the plot. I'll simply say that this book contains a wonderful mix of real-life heartache, pulse-pounding suspense, and the awesomeness of the spiritual and supernatural. Cynthia T. Her father was in the Coast Guard, so she grew up near the ocean, living in California, the tiny island of Guam, and Oahu (one of the Hawaiian Islands). Moving from place to place left her with the impression that life is an adventure. She has since learned that a life of faith brings the greatest adventures of all.
