OverviewPrepared by the secretariat of the UN Conference on Trade and Development, this publication identifies the main developments in world maritime transport and presents relevant statistical data. It focuses on the maritime transport in developing countries as compared with other groups of countries, and highlights the links between the development of global trade and maritime transport activities. This edition contains a special chapter on the regional developments in trade and transport networks in East Asia. Findings include: world output grew in 2000 by four per cent over the previous year, the highest in a decade, although it is expected to drop in 2001; world seaborne trade recorded its 15th consecutive increase in 2000, reaching a record high of 5.88 billion tons; and global maritime trade growth is expected to decline to two per cent in 2001.
