Overview

"Retreat of the Soul journals the spiritual pilgrimage of a group of ministers from a variety of theological traditions. Their journey parallels their annual retreat to the Abbey of Gethsemani near Bardstown, Kentucky. This collection of writings invites you into their spiritual journey of the soul. Their writing expands the Apostle Paul's encouragement to ""pray without ceasing"" as the core of the contemplative life. In these reflections a person will discover how the disciplines of silence, meditation, ritual and nature set the table for personal communion with Christ in prayer. There is a biblical practicality that encourages the awareness of Christ's presence on the daily path. In the midst of the realities of life one needs to retreat to reinvigorate the soul. Spiritual renewal in worship and a deeper appreciation for the cross of Christ awaits one on every page. Be encouraged to ""be still"" and hear Christ knocking at the heart's door. He invites all to a Retreat of the Soul in prayer. This book is ideal for a personal spiritual journey. There are also discussion questions that encourage meaningful small group interaction."

Reviews

I've just finished Retreat of the Soul and I'm tempted read it again right now. I'll do so soon, and repeatedly. The writing is as uncluttered as the subject, the premise is intriguing, and the ideas are consistently uplifting. There's a small spiritual retreat on every page, and I savored the marvelous mingling of traditions described in the chapters. In a loud age, how we need some hushed and holy hours! In matters of the soul, strategic retreat is necessary for spiritual progress. -Robert J. Morgan, Author, Pastor, SpeakerI feel honored for the privilege of reading Retreat of the Soul. The very first thought I had as I read it was: You know what? I really need this! I truly believe that my own spiritual life will be enhanced by reading this devotional piece. How marvelous that ministers from different theological traditions and backgrounds are willing to ask, What can we learn by observing the spiritual disciplines of Trappist monks? In a time so terribly superficial, especially in spiritual matters, it is thrilling to read about the Bardstown Brothers and their desire to know God in a more intimate way! This is my prayer: Lord, use these men and their devotional book to deepen the prayer lives of believers. Amen. -Dr. David Enyart, Retired Professor Johnson UniversityThis is a most refreshing compilation of writings from a gaggle of Free Churchers telling their journey into contemplative spirituality. They boldly go where few Free Churchers dare go, yet they maintain the integrity of their distinctive denominational practices and worship styles. Allow them to take you on their pilgrimage into the contemplative spiritual discipline where they find deeper pools of thirst-quenching waters that not only refresh their souls but give more strength for their personal ministries. Follow them into the deeper life and relationship with God that can only come with silence and solitude. -Tim Sturgill, Chaplain, USAF (Ret)Retreat of the Soul may be the only book that I have ever read from front to back in one sitting. As a public official, I rarely have the time. I must confess that often I am too distracted with life to concentrate for more than a few short moments. In today's fast-paced, busy, and inter-connected world, distractions are everywhere! We rush from one task to the next with a furious speed. Yet, as this collection of writings reminds us, we all need to slow down, disconnect from the world, seek a place of quiet worship, and reconnect with God daily. I hope that you will be as challenged, encouraged, and strengthened as I was reading every page. -C.H. Chuck Slemp III, Commonwealth's Attorney for Wise County & the City of Norton, Virginia
