Overview

In this comprehensive guide for practicing engineers and students, Ertugrul explains the field of renewable energy and distributed generation technologies and describes the transformation occurring in power grids due to the rise of renewable energy sources and emerging technologies. This book covers key areas such as the status of grid transformation, photovoltaic (PV) solar energy, wind energy systems, distributed energy resources, microgrids, grid‑scale and domestic battery storage systems, e‑mobility and emerging distributed energy technologies. The text presents an equilibrium between theoretical concepts and practical applications, with each chapter emphasizing both theory and practical application. Each chapter commences with a lucid explanation of the subject matter, which is then succeeded by an investigation into its real‑world applications and implications. Supplementary material is also provided, such as real wind data files, PV data files and Matrix Laboratory (MATLAB®) and Excel codes. This includes a sample real data set from grid‑scale autonomous microgrid test platforms and household, distribution and transmission‑level power system data. The book also incorporates a section consisting of problems, quizzes and solutions. This element prompts the reader to put the theoretical knowledge to use in addressing real‑world challenges, thereby cultivating a more in‑depth grasp of the topic. Through this in‑depth approach, readers will be able to apply their comprehensive knowledge and practical understanding to decision‑making regarding future challenges in the energy industry. This book is an invaluable guide for professionals working in the field, particularly those who aim to stay updated on the latest technologies and trends. Undergraduate and postgraduate students will also benefit from the book’s comprehensive approach and inclusion of real‑world data and problems to solve, which will build their expertise and give them a solid foundation for their future careers.

Reviews

This is a critical resource that navigates the challenges and opportunities lying ahead of us as we transition to a more sustainable and resilient energy future. Mark Z. Jacobson, Professor, Stanford University, USA Provides a good introduction to the wide range of technologies that are transforming the power system. Offers a comprehensive overview of the disruptive technologies that are driving the energy transition. Babu Chalamala, Senior Scientist, Grid Modernization and Energy Storage, Sandia National Laboratories, USA Dr. Ertugrul has achieved an exceptional result in this textbook. The book covers some of the most essential verities associated with the current modernization of electric power grids around the world. It will surely serve as an essential text for both students and practicing engineers in the power and energy sector. The book provides excellent coverage of both the physical concepts associated with energy conversion for modern inverter based resources (IBRs) and the opportunities and challenge ahead in the continued global push for greater deployment of IBR technologies. Pouyan Pourbeik, President, Power and Energy, Analysis, Consulting and Education, Texas, USA As renewable energy, especially solar and wind energy, becomes cheaper and more widely deployed, it has become urgent to shift in the basic paradigm that has governed electricity planning for close to a century to integrate these variable sources of electricity. This detailed examination of the technical elements of an evolving power grid will help with transitioning to a new paradigm. M. V. Ramana, Professor and Simons Chair, School of Public Policy and Global Affairs, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada This great book focusses the inner core of the ongoing energy transition with the power grid and its most essential components, the supply of solar and wind electricity, the role of batteries and how power electronics enable the system combined with the practical investigation of microgrids. Christian Breyer, Professor for Solar Economy, LUT University, Finland Dr. Ertugrul’s book is required reading for anyone interested in the decarbonisation of the power industry. At last, there is a readable, comprehensive engineering explanation on how the power system works today and how it will need to work when fossil plants are retired and the grid is more distributed through the introduction of electrification and distributed energy. Audrey Zibelman, Former CEO, Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) A comprehensive book about the future modern power grid with renewable sources - gives a lot of insight in the challenges and possibilities. Frede Blaabjerg, Professor in Power Electronics, Aalborg University, Denmark
