One of the most famous of all flower painters, Redoute produced probably the best-loved series of flower paintings in the world. Between 1817 and 1824 he published three volumes with the simple titles Les Roses, which included 169 pictures, divided into three groups: wild ancient roses, such as the Dog and Evergreen roses, roses from medieval times (including the White and Eglantine roses) and newer roses known to gardeners of his own day. These 169 exquisite colour-plates of individual roses are beautifully set, one to a page, in this new, large format, single volume in which the details are sharp, accurate and lovingly observed. Redoute, born in 1759, in Belgium, came from a distinguished family of painters. He worked in the Museum Nationale d'Historie Naturelle in Paris before he left home to travel, and then made his living as an itinerant painter, accepting commissions for interior decoration, portraits and religious works. But it was the flower pictures of Rachel Ruysch and Jan van Huysum which were to inspire the work for which Redoute has become so famous, and which led to the patronage of royalty - notably Queen Marie-Antoinette. There is an interesting account of his life in the early pages of this book (he lived to be 81), as well as notes on the roses illustrated and their various uses. All the text is in three languages: English, French and German. Altogether a magnificent volume - a wonderful gift for any gardener, both as a source of information, and for perpetual enjoyment.
