Overview

This edited collection brings together a selection of papers first presented at the Legal Services Research Center's seventh international research conference, held in London in the summer of 2008. The papers are drawn from three different continents and authored by some of the leading experts in the field. The collection sheds light on how major legal aid jurisdictions are facing the challenge of providing, shaping and extending the reach of legal aid in the face of increasing pressure on resources. The papers provide valuable insight into the role of research in the development of legal aid, and are linked in their focus on innovation; from schemes to encourage the next generation of legal aid lawyers, to services built around needs of users and communities, to methods for ensuring quality of services and mechanisms to deliver services for, and engage, 'hard-to-reach' and disadvantaged groups. This is the second anthology produced by the Legal Services Research Center. In building upon many of the themes of the first, Transforming Lives: Law and Social Process (ISBN 9780117021464), it will be of particular interest to policy makers, practitioners and researchers working in the access to justice field and looking to update their knowledge of current developments.
