OverviewAbout the book from the author: This book provides the questions I pose to my students for their daily writing journals. Getting my students to write at the start of class has been a great way to begin my time with them because it immediately involves them in a short activity that engages their minds and produces work. Students earn full credit if they address the questions and give support of their answers in their responses. For feedback I'll point out writing errors and give suggestions and comments of support. Through their responses I see their strength and weaknesses as writers and find the areas they need to work on, but often, and perhaps more importantly, it gives me insight on issues my students are dealing with. Students will often confide in their journals topics they are unable or unwilling to vocalize. The journal questions have been a great way to cut through many issues both academically and emotionally that students face each day. This helps with building relationships that ultimately results in trust, which typically manifests into them producing quality work. These prompts will often inspire discussions about key issues of the day which are a great way to make important connections with my students. Through developing these personal connections it has enabled me to know my students better and to teach to them at their levels. I use these questions as tools that I think other teachers can easily implement in their classroom. Hopefully teachers from a variety of academic levels will find this book useful and can create writing and discussion lessons based on these questions. Parents might find this book a fun way to discover what their children are thinking about and how they use reason and logic to arrive at answers. See where these questions might take you and above all enjoy what you discover and have good time mulling through the possibilities. I hope the questions in this book inspire deeper thinking and contemplative reflections; things which humanity needs more than ever.
