Previously, he practiced law, coordinated a pro bono legal program, served as judicial clerk in the United States District Court, and published a local sports newspaper. Barry is also the author of Mindfulness in Judaism: Comparing Jewish with Buddhist Teachings on Awakening. He received a BA in Religion from Princeton University, a JD from the University of Oregon, and a PhD in Religious Studies from the University of California, Santa Barbara.
