Overview

At no time in U.S. history have young people been confronted by such an array of positive and negative influences and opportunities. The recent coronavirus pandemic, in particular, has adversely impacted the behavioural health of young people by disrupting normal school, family, interpersonal, and social norms. In this text, the authors respond to recent calls from practitioners, policymakers, and the public to increase the use of effective prevention approaches for child and adolescent behavioural health challenges. This book reviews evidence and identifies practice and policy issues pertaining to the prevention of common child and adolescent behavioural health problems: 1) substance use/misuse; 2) delinquent conduct; 3) violence, including the perpetration and victimisation of bullying, sexual violence, and dating violence; and 4) school dropout. The authors identify effective prevention approaches and discuss the challenges associated with developing, implementing, and testing prevention strategies. The applied nature of the book offers readers detailed program and intervention examples. All eight chapters in this new edition have been thoroughly updated to reflect the latest scholarship and thinking in the field. A key highlight of the book is the accompanying Active Learning resources for students. This is a must-have text for clinical and community practice, social policy, and youth and human development courses in social work, family studies, public health, psychology, and other human services programs.

Reviews

"""The text is well written and provides information on an important topic."" Karla Palmer, PhD, RN, Michigan State University, College of Nursing ""Promoting the Behavioral Health of Children and Adolescents: Evidence-Based Prevention Strategies in Schools, Families, and Communities is a well-researched, clearly written, and practically relevant resource for the next generation of clinicians. Particularly in light of the crushing need for well-prepared mental health and related health care professionals, this work is a timely effective resource that would be a valuable addition to most any curriculum that covers mental health and behavioral medicine."" Toby J. Brooks, PhD, LAT, ATC, CSCS, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center ""A timely book that presents real solutions to the unprecedented challenges for today's children and youth. In a world with a seemingly endless cycle of research and news detailing the dangers and threats to the well-being of youth, this book highlights how prevention science has improved the lives of young people and provides a path to promoting the healthy development of all young people....Perhaps the most impressive and useful aspect of the book is an approachable synthesis to the vast and nuanced literature bases for risk and protective factors as well as effective school-based and family-based prevention programs....An invaluable resource to a broad audience of students, practitioners, and researchers. The book thoughtfully integrates the latest evidence and applies it to real-world conditions."" Katie Massey Combs in Research on Social Work Practice"
