Overview'Prokaryotic Genomes' represents a print version of the 'PLoS ONE Prokaryotic Genome Collection'. The collection is an attempt to present and highlight a number of important articles that describe whole genome sequence and/or comparative genomics of important prokaryotic organisms. We believe that this collection will be able to facilitate understanding of the biology and lifestyle of the underlying organisms not only through the content of the Research Articles, but also from the external information sources which are linked to from the original articles. This printed volume will be particularly of interest to the students and teaching communities and the libraries in developing countries where internet access is limited or not affordable as yet. 'Prokaryotic Genomes' is produced in collaboration with CreateSpace and is edited and distributed by Dr Niyaz Ahmed [PLoS ONE Section Editor for Genomics & Microbiology] under the Creative Commons Attribution License. Articles are presented in order of publication date and new articles will be periodically added to the collection. All articles contained in this book are also available online through the PLoS ONE Collections website (http: //www.ploscollections.org/static/poneCollections.action). Table of ContentsReviewsAuthor InformationNiyaz leads a long-term program in Pathogen Biology at the University of Hyderabad and supervises a team of 7 PhD students and 2 post-doctoral fellows. Current research interests of his lab include diversity, evolution and biology of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Helicobacter pylori in the context of evolution of survival mechanisms, acquisition and optimization of virulence, and their impact on dissemination dynamics, invasion, persistence, signaling events, molecular pathogenesis, strain evolution and prevention measures. To address these issues he uses a host of genomic and cellular microbiology approaches. Amidst his busy research career Niyaz is an ardent supporter of the PLoS and BMC-lead contemporary approaches to Open Science, Open Access to Science and Open Evaluation of Science. He is a Section Editor (Microbiology and Genomics) of PLoS ONE and has overseen/handled peer review of dozens of landmark articles there. Niyaz is also associated with the International Society for Genomic and Evolutionary Microbiology and the European Helicobacter Study Group. More recently he has championed the cause of Gut Pathogens, a specialized Open Access journal of which he is an Editor-in-Chief. Niyaz teaches at post-graduate and doctoral levels and is In-charge of a Laboratory Course in Molecular Biology. He is also a member of the curriculum development committee for PhD course-work.
