Sc. degrees in electrical engineering from Yarmouk University, Jordan, in 1984 and 1987, respectively. He obtained his Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Ottawa, Canada, in 1995. Between 1987 and 1989 he was a communications engineer at Jordan Civil Defense. From 1989 to 1991 he was a lecturer and researcher at the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Petroleum and Minerals, Saudi Arabia. Since 1995 he has been with the Department of Electrical Engineering at the Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST), where he is currently an associate professor. Dr. Banat has taught several courses in communications and signal processing. He has supervised over 25 master students. Between September and December 2005 he was an Erasmus Mundus visiting professor at the TSC Department of UPC in Barcelona, Spain. During November and December 2008, he was a visiting professor at the Department of Communications and Networking at Helsinki University of Technology (TKK) in Finland. Between March and September 2009, he has been a visiting research associate at the Centre Tecnològic de Telecomunicacions de Catalunya in Barcelona, Spain. During June and July 2012, he has been an invited professor at the TSC Department of UPC in Barcelona, Spain. Dr. Banat has been involved in several international cooperation programs, including a TEMPUS project in wireless communications, a Swedish government project in MIMO systems, and an NSF project in WDM networks. He is a reviewer for several (mainly IEEE) publications. He is a TPC member of many international conferences. He is the general chairman of international conferences organized by Mosharaka for Research and Studies. Dr. Banat is the founder of the Wireless Communications Laboratory at JUST.
