OverviewThis book contains the proceedings of an international colloquium in honour of Professor Walter van Gerven which was held in Leuven on 15-16 September 2000 and organized by the Universities of Leuven and Maastricht in the framework of the lus Commune Research School. Walter van Gerven has been a professor of Law in Leuven for four decades and in Maastricht between 1994 and 2000; he has been Advocate General at the Court of Justice of the European Communities (1988-1994) and was Member of the Committee of Independent Experts which screened the European Commission in 1999. The book is built around three themes: good governance in the European Union, judicial review of administrative action and liability of supranational, State and private actors. In Leuven, he teaches public international law, law of international organizations, the law of the World Trade Organization, space law and humanitarian and security law. At the College of Europe, Sciences Po and Luiss University he teaches EU external relations law. He studied law and philosophy in Antwerp and Yale University (LLM, 1990), was a Visiting Researcher at Harvard Law School and obtained his PhD at KU Leuven (1996). He taught at the Universities of Antwerp and Maastricht. He was a Visiting Professor at different universities and r�f�rendaire at the European Court of Justice (1991-1994). He is Member of the Flemish Royal Academy of Belgium for Arts and Sciences, is President of the United Nations Association Flanders Belgium, and practises law as Of Counsel at Linklaters. He has published widely on international, EU, corporate and financial law. Jules Stuyck has long experience in EU law, both as an attorney and as an academic. He regularly assists private clients as well as the European institutions (Commission and Council), agencies and bodies before the European Courts. He represents clients before the European Commission in competition cases, as complainants in internal market, state aid and competition disputes, and before the Belgian Competition Council (in cartel and dominance cases). He is also an experienced litigator in the Belgian courts. Until September 2013, Jules taught substantive European law at the KU Leuven and at the Raboud Universiteit Nijmegen, the Netherlands. He is now Emeritus Professor from both Universities. In recent years, he has been teaching European substantive law at the Universit� Panth�on-Assas Paris 2, France. He still teaches European competition law at the Central European University in Budapest, Hungary and he is regularly invited as guest professor for EU consumer law at Paris 2.
