Overview

Campbell McCool, the preacher in Brendon Boone's novel PREACHER AND CO, has seen and lived horrors no man should have to endure. Now that his stint as a Confederate doctor during the American Civil War is over, he must come to terms with all the sins he's witnessed and committed, especially the final one. The last thing he needs complicating his journey toward redemption is the irrepressible 9-year-old newly-freed slave boy Tademus Co, who has his own dark secrets for which he seeks reparations. Their intertwined pilgrimage through all the lingering hate and prejudice of post-Civil War America will not be an easy one. The obstacles this unlikely pair faces, and the issues they struggle with, bring new perspectives to the same issues that continue to haunt us to this day. In addition to the societal issues, it also explores the varied and sometimes elusive meanings of brotherhood and family. While much has been written and rewritten about this era in American history, no work has presented these disturbing and tenacious issues with such love, heart, hope, and adventure as PREACHER AND CO. It is a story for everyone looking for the answers to the complicated questions raised by today's headlines, or just looking for an exciting, emotional story.
