Overview

The course is designed to provide students with didactic principles and clinical practice skills for providing basic nursing care for the adult client, using Florence Nightingale's Environmental Nursing theory to implement The Nursing Process. The content of the course will focus on basic Nursing Principles and Practices for the client Fluid and Electrolyte Balance Disorders, clients with Cancer and clients with alterations in following body systems: Integumentary, Muscloskeletal, Allergic-Immune and Autoimmune Disorders, Neurologic and Sensory Disorders, Gastrointestinal and Accessory System, Urinary and Reproductive. Clinical experiences will be provided in acute and long- term care facilities. The course content is directed by the scope of practice defined in the Illinois Nursing and Advanced Practice Nursing Act of 2007 for the Practical Nurse: PREREQUISITE: Grade of C or better in CPN 104. COURSE THEORY OBJECTIVES/THEORY PERFORMANCE CRITERIA Upon completion of this course the student will be able to: 1. Use the concepts of Florence Nightingale's Environmental Theory to correlate didactic principals with clinical practice skills to provide basic nursing care to adult clients that have alterations in client Fluid and Electrolyte Balance Disorders and clients with alterations in following body systems: Integumentary, Muscloskeletal, Allergic-Immune and Autoimmune Disorders, Neurologic and Sensory Disorders, Gastrointestinal and Accessory System, Urinary and Reproductive 2. Correlate didactic principles with clinical practice skills to provide basic nursing care to adult clients with Fluid and Electrolyte Balance Disorders, and clients with alterations in following body systems: Integumentary, Muscloskeletal, Allergic-Immune and Autoimmune Disorders, Neurologic and Sensory Disorders, Gastrointestinal and Accessory, Urinary and Reproductive. 3. Demonstrate an understanding of Nutrition and Diet Therapy related to the disorders presented in this course. 4. Assist the health care team in meeting the psychosocial needs of clients with disorders presented in this course. 5. Assist the health care team in providing client and family education related to the disorders presented in this course. 6. Provide appropriate nursing care for IV therapy insertion/sites, monitor fluid intake and output. 7. Provide a safe and competent nursing care environment for the client with disorders presented in this course. 8. Exhibit accuracy in performing math skills as it relates to medication administration. 9. Identify the practical nurse's role and responsibilities in the preparation, administration of drugs and monitoring of patient's responses to drug therapies. 10. Demonstrate effective oral and written communication by using proper grammar, spelling and punctuation on written assignments.
