Overview

Dave Kiang is a retired professional engineer who has been writing poetry for most of his eighty-nine years. A new collection of 260 poems is provided here in his second book of poetry. They cover topics from love and growing older, politics to judo, engineering to philosophy and much more. Dave co-authored a book, Practical Application of Dependability Engineering, published in 2012. David Kiang recounts his feelings in poetry covering relationships and family, work, judo and politics. The loss of his only child and his wife have immensely affected him. His engineering work with the Canadian Standards Association and consulting around the world show up in reflections on the humbling and enlightening aspects of challenges. Most unusually, the author footnotes many of the esoteric and unusual references in the poems with further explanation for the interested reader. David Kiang (Dave) is a poet at heart. He took up an interest in writing poetry during his spare time while he worked as a professional engineer and consultant. In his retirement, Dave felt emotionally touched by the events of the day; and by recalling his past experiences. His current poetic venture and creation are in his book Poems of a Life Journey. Dave graduated from the University of Toronto with a BASc degree in Electrical Engineering. Dave continued his post-graduate studies in evening classes while working in Ottawa. He received his MBA degree from the University of Ottawa. Dave spent more than four decades contributing to his professional calling. Dave worked for high-tech industries in defence and communications. Dave specializes in dependability engineering for safety, integrity, and quality assurance applicable to electronic products and systems. In his latter professional years, Dave formed his consulting company T.D. Kiang and Associates, serving clients worldwide. The Standards Council of Canada appointed Dave as a technical expert in ISO/IEC participation in international standards development for a decade. Dave had years of travelling in various countries and regions. The changing environments with cultural, language and ethnic differences gave him extensive exposure to better understand humanity and appreciate the meaning of life. Dave has been an avid Judoka since his university days. He earned the rank of Rokudan (6-degree black belt) in Judo. Dave received his formal Kata training at the Kodokan in Japan. He served as the Kata instructor; every summer for more than 30 years; at the YMCA International Judo Camp in New York. Dave retired from active Judo practice at age 80. Dave enjoys classical music, opera, and pop songs of the forties and fifties. Now nearing age 90, Dave shifted his attention to poetry writing to calm his nerves, redirecting his energy and emotion to more productive use of his intellectual talents.
