OverviewBridging to English is a very important part of education reform in Papua New Guinea. For the first three years of schooling (elementary prep, 1 and 2), children are taught the skills of literacy in their own local language in tok ples skuls. English is introduced from about grade 3, the first year of primary school. The aim of this dictionary is to help young children in the âBridging to Englishâ years. Each child can record the meanings of English words in the tok ples columns u sing their own local language, or perhaps tok pisin. When competed, each child will have compiled their own personal dictionary in their own local language.
