Overview"Calling this a major contribution to the field of psycholinguistics, Professor Dennis Molfese notes that it ""stands out as perhaps the major work in the area of phonological development in the last decade. It should become a major reference work and the procedures employed (both for data collection and, perhaps, more so for data analysis) could well set the tenor for the next decade."" The eight essays by various contributors in this book review the literature on phonological development, emphasizing problems relating to age, phonemes, and distinctive features. The methodology of data collection, storage, retrieval, presentation, and analysis is described. Data are presented descriptively by individual chapters for each of five age groups: 18, 24, 36, 48, and 72 months. Summary data are presented, using both descriptive and inferential statistics across the entire sample. One hundred children, 20 at each age group, served as subjects. All language samples were collected in spontaneous situations. A total of 86,661 phonemes was entered for analysis. Two distinctive feature systems--the Irwin-Wong and the Chomsky-Halle--were employed in all analyses. Data for both phonemes and distinctive features were presented in terms of distribution, acceptability of production, and nature of any replacement." Full Product DetailsAuthor: John V.
